During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Component Design course shifted gears from the normal drill powered vehicle project to create a unique kinetic sculpture that had to fit within a small footprint of 1'x1'. This project challenged our team to think outside the box and develop a visually striking and compact mechanical design.

Component Design Internals

As the Manufacturing Engineer, I ensured that our design was manufacturable and that communication with the manufacturing shop was prompt, yielding the timely production and assembly of our project. The DC motor drives a belt that turns the driveshaft which has cams connected to it. These cams drive the vertical motion of dowel pins guided by the four stand-offs to create motion of the acrylic hinged waves.

Component Design Action

Our kinetic sculpture is an aesthetically pleasing mechanism that emulates a person in a boat rowing in choppy waters.
